I’ve met a lot of people in my almost twenty years of working who really dislike their jobs. They feel they are “stuck” and don’t have options. Often, they started working at a company and just stayed there. They really didn’t like it to begin with, but getting up and going into work every day was easier than “throwing in the towel” and beginning the search for something new.

Even the phrase “throwing in the towel” implies that some level of defeat must occur in order to acknowledge the job you’re in is not what you want or hoped and it never will be. I don’t think recognizing that you’re in a job you hate is defeat. I think it is powerful. It allows you to consider alternatives.

Research, dream of the possibilities and begin to take small steps to look for something else.

I don’t recommend quitting without a plan. I recommend looking in the paper and online for job openings. Attend a job fair, use your alumni group for resources and tell friends and neighbors that your job hunt has begun.

You never know when someone will know of a job that is a great fit for your skills and talents. What have you got to lose to check it out? Stay in a job you hate or be open to options and a possible career change.

I know what I would choose.
